TECHNOLOGY & DEVELOPMENT

I have been programming and tinkering with electronics since elementary school. My primary interest lies in using my technical skills to advance projects in sustainable development and social justice globally. As an intern, I have had the opportunity to work with professors and graduate students from all over the world at both USC and UCLA. Here are some examples of projects that I have worked on, and will work on this summer, and how they tie into different United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

UN Sustainable Development Goal 12: Ensure sustainable production and consumption patterns. 2018 - 2019 - MIT LaunchX - Polytechnic School Team Emergence - An increasing number of people on the planet are consuming growing amounts of goods, and it is critical to make production and consumption more sustainable by raising awareness levels of producers and consumers, specifically in the area of electrical and electronic equipment. Our LaunchX startup is developing a product that reduces e-waste by making it possible to repair frayed and damaged electronic cords cheaply and quickly.

All UN Sustainable Development Goals. Summer 2018 - USC Internship with Dr. Stefan Schaal, Professor of Computer Science, Neuroscience, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern California. Founding Director of the Max-Planck-Institute for Intelligent Systems in Germany - Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to accelerate progress on all UN global development goals but also poses a range of complex challenges. I joined Dr. Stefan Schaal’s Computational Learning and Motor Control Lab at USC to learn about AI by working on pattern recognition in the field of humanoid robotics. This research is vital because robotics can be used in disasters, rescuing people from dangerous situations where human rescuers cannot go. AI also has applications in all fields, including health, infrastructure, agriculture, urban development, and economic planning.

UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being at all ages. Summer 2017 - UCLA Internship with Dr. Van Savage, Professor in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Biomathematics Departments - As an intern, I worked with Dr. Van Savage and his research team to develop mathematical computer-based models of vascular networks. This ongoing research will lead to improved diagnosis of abnormalities such as cancers and circulatory diseases, which are leading causes of human suffering, illness, and death worldwide.

Hi! My name is Matthew, and I’m a 2020 Global Scholar at the Polytechnic School. I have been studying French at Poly for the past three years. A highlight of attending Poly has been the Global Initiatives Program. Through this program, our family has hosted students from Victor DuRuy and Saint Martin schools in France, as well as from Nirayama HS in Japan; I also have had the opportunity to visit France as part of this exchange program; our group travel blog is: http://polygipfrance.blogspot.com I am part of LaunchX Team Emergence. We are creating an environmentally conscious startup to increase the lifecycle of external power chargers and electrical cords, in an effort to protect our environment from e-waste. We will be heading to MIT on May 4, 2019, to compete as Global Finalists and will be pitching our business to gain funding and support. Follow us @cordrestored and visit us at www.cordrestored.com I hope to share my LaunchX experience as part of my Capstone Project.
